You cannot work with what you cannot name
Have you ever had a conversation where something someone says rubs you the wrong way?
You cannot quite explain why, but the irritation stays with you.
You cannot work with that which you cannot name.
Emotion is not the enemy of reason, but a well of energy and information.
But if misinterpreted or misdirected, it becomes difficult to manage.
Or worse, it is ignored or pushed down.
When we are in a regulated state, emotions give us information about how we interpret the world. Therefore, the ability to work with and manage one’s emotions becomes a core skill in daily life.
Many people have never been given the chance to interact with emotions in a healthy way. Instead, emotions are often regarded as something that stands in the way of productivity and success. Which they may be if not treated with respect.
Have you ever had a conversation where something the other person said simply rubs you the wrong way? But at the moment you cannot process what’s happening. The frustration is now directed towards the other person. Or have you picked up your phone and remained distracted the rest of the day by a feeling you cannot name?
In our pursuit of Integrity, our emotions ought to be met as the allies as they are. The first step is to learn to name what you feel.
You can start right now.
What are the emotions you feel right now? Are you bored?
Curious? Excited? Annoyed? Happy? Calm?
Put a name on it, and say to yourself “I feel (…)”
